Hard disk drives on computers and digital devices are extremely durable and reliable. That is, physically durable. In terms of file corruption all of these devices including Apple iPods are quite susceptible to what is known as a logic crash. A logic crash occurs when files used to access other files as part of an operating system become corrupted. The obvious solution is to reload the operating system.
